The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time.

Write-in candidates are not much of a factor so far in the race -- although they could be, if it's incredibly close.

So far, there are only 1, write-in votes, or 1. Moore is slightly ahead of Jones so far, although only a handful of counties have reported, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

Moore leads Jones There is a gender gap in the election. More than half of men are voting for Moore 57 percent , while more than half of women voted for Jones 57 percent.

Much of that support for Jones however is from African-American women. White women are still backing Moore with about two-thirds of their votes.

So far, African-Americans make up about 30 percent of the electorate. If that holds, it would surpass the 28 percent of the vote African-Americans made up when Barack Obama was re-elected in More than nine in 10 black voters are backing Jones.

Of the last-minute deciders -- the 10 percent of voters who decided in the last few days -- they threw their support behind Moore 56 percent to Jones 37 percent.

It's only votes, but the Alabama Secretary of State published its first results at roughly 8: Polls have closed in Alabama.

It will take a short period of time, however, for the first results to begin rolling in on the Alabama Secretary of State's website.

But the race appears to be close so far, as CBS News has been interviewing voters leaving the polling place throughout the day.

Voters in Alabama have one hour left to go to the polls. CBS News will begin reporting results as soon as they become available.

John Cornyn, R-Texas, confirmed the meeting. In the past, McConnell has said the Senate should launch an ethics investigation into Moore, while Sen.

Moore took to Twitter earlier in the afternoon to post the audio of the robocall Mr. Trump recorded on his behalf. In a state that overwhelmingly voted for Mr.

Trump over Hillary Clinton just one year ago, Alabama voters do not see him as glowingly now. At this point, Alabama voters are split on the president's job performance -- 48 percent approve ant 48 percent disapprove.

Roughly 69 percent of voters view him unfavorably. CBS News spoke with some voters in Alabama, where, across the state, there was a steady stream of voters in small towns and big cities.

McClusky said she always thought he was a good man, and doesn't "pay attention" to much of the "talk" about him. The Jones campaign has hoped to motivate young and African-American voters to elect the first Democrat to the Senate in a quarter century.

The first exit polls are released, revealing Alabama voters divided on the validity of the allegations against Moore. More than four in 10 believe they are false.

Most Jones voters believe the accusations, while most of Moore's voters do not. For about 40 percent of voters, the allegations were the most important factor in their vote, mostly for Jones voters.

Moore voters were more motivated by their support for Mr. Many Republican leaders proposed shifting their support to a write-in candidate such as Strange.

Sixteen is the legal age of consent in Alabama. Jones was sworn into office on January 3, , becoming the first Democratic U.

Senator from Alabama since Howell Heflin 's retirement in The Republican primary attracted national attention, especially following Trump's endorsement of incumbent Senator Luther Strange.

His two main rivals in the primary consisted of former state judge Roy Moore and Mo Brooks. While Strange showed no signs of losing the first round of the primary, almost every opinion poll showed him trailing Roy Moore in a runoff.

Strange came in second place in the first round of the primary behind Roy Moore, securing a spot in the runoff. National interest in the race dramatically increased in the month before the runoff.

Strange maintained his endorsement from Trump, who campaigned for him in Huntsville during the closing days of the campaign. Despite the endorsement of Trump, Strange was handily defeated by Roy Moore in the runoff.

President Donald Trump supported Moore's opponent Strange during the primary runoff, and almost the whole national Republican establishment wanted Strange to win.

On November 9, The Washington Post reported that four women had accused Roy Moore of engaging in sexual conduct with them when they were teenagers and he was an assistant district attorney in his thirties.

One of the women was 14 years old at the time, below the legal age of consent. After this, certain Republican leaders and conservative organizations withdrew their endorsements of Moore or asked him to drop out of the campaign.

At the time of the revelations, it was too close to the election for Moore's name to be removed from the ballot. One suggestion was to ask Governor Kay Ivey to delay the special election until , [19] but Ivey said she had no plans to change the election date.

Lee Busby launched a write-in campaign stating that he thought there is room for a centrist in the race. Doug Jones defeated Roy Moore by a margin of 21, votes.

Voter turnout was Jones won primarily by running up huge margins in the state's major cities. The state's four largest counties— Jefferson home to the state's largest city of Birmingham , Mobile home to Mobile , Madison home to Huntsville , and Montgomery home to the state capital of Montgomery —all gave Jones 56 percent or more of the vote.

He carried Jefferson by over 83, votes, and Montgomery by almost 30, votes; either county would have been more than enough to give him the victory.

Jones also dominated the Black Belt. He took over 96 percent of the black vote, and 61 percent of votes from those under While Moore dominated the state's rural areas, he significantly underperformed Trump's totals in those areas, as well as the suburbs.

As of December 15, Moore demanded a recount and refused to concede the race, despite being urged by Trump, Bannon, and others to do so.

If the final margin of victory is less than 0. If not, then either candidate can request a recount at his expense. Because the number of write-in votes was larger than Jones' margin of victory, the names written in were both counted and listed.

Nick Saban , Alabama's head coach , finished in seventh with more than votes. After the election, Moore filed a lawsuit attempting to block the state from certifying the election and calling for an investigation into voter fraud.

On December 28, , a judge dismissed this lawsuit and state officials certified the election results, officially declaring Doug Jones the winner.

They are hopeful they will be able to certify the results sometime between December 27 and Those late December dates, however, are contingent upon all 67 counties meeting the December 22 deadline to report their results.

If counties miss that deadline, it will cause problems and possibly a delay in certification.
